Photographic History

My 'design' career started when I was aabout seven and I decided I wanted to be an architect. That was my dream until I was 15 years old. The thought of designing a building and seeing it made was an adventure to me. Then I realized it took years from concept to completion in the world of architecture. You had to listen to structural engineers, and it was hard to be 'overly' creative.

In high school I learned to joys of photoshop and flash. I learned how to create images from nothing, and soon I was even making some money designing posters and websites. Much quicker results than architecture.

In college I continued to do design work for additional cash, and I realized how much money we were spending on stock photography images for our designs. I figured, how hard could it be to do it myself. That Christmas I got my first digital camera (thanks mom and Nelle).

I soon learned that quality photographs were harder to take than I thought, but I did develop love for the art. I took 25,000 pictures in my first 6 months. I actually wore out the motor in that little camera by turning it on and off so often.

Since that time, my love for the art ahs grown, and so has my knowledge and skill. I worked under a couple of great photographers in the Edmonton area, and have read every book and website I can to glean more knowledge.

In 2006 I started shooting for Design Pics Inc, as well as doing weddings, portrait and commercial photography. It has been my full time profession since May 2007.

Professional Relations

As of May 2007 Stephen is now a full time photographer working in the Alberta Area doing weddings, stock photography, band shoots, couples and the occasional family portrait.

Stephen Kiers shoots stock photography for Design Pics Inc, a Christian stock photography group based in Edmonton.

My wife and I also are the Youth Pastors at Gateway City Church, a church plant in Spruce Grove, Alberta. I graduated from Vanguard Bible College in 2005 with a four year pastoral degree and now devote as much time and energy to working with teenagers as I can get away with.

History

Nov 3, 1983- Was welcomed into the world.

1990ish- Got first camera. Took lotsa pictures, but soon forgot about it while I waiting for film to be developed. (two years later)

1996- Became a Christian

1998- Started Designing websites Professionally

2001- Graduated High School

2002- Five week mission trip to Ukraine

2003- Second mission trip to Ukraine

Dec 25, 2003- Got my First Digital Camera. A Sony DSC-73, a 3.2 MP Point and Shoot. This planted the bug...

March 2004- Three and a half month trip to Tokmok, Kyrgyzstan. Lived with a local family, and took pictures of everything. One of the highlights of my life.

July 2004- Returned to Canada with over 20,000 pictures of Kyrgystan.

July 2004- Brought Camera in for repair. I was told I used it too much and wore down. Point and shoots aren't made for that much use. They fixed it, twice. Had to replace the motor and lens and a lot of other stuff. Over $600 in repairs (camera originally $400). Silly if you ask me.

August 2004- Shot my First Wedding.

October 2004- Purchased the brand new Canon 20D dSLR. It was new and cool at one time. Eh, hense is technology.

May 2005- Graduated Vanguard College

July 2005- Started attending Gateway Church. Started working with youth at the church. I am still there running the youth program, along with my lovely wife.

November 2005- Started shooting for Design Pics Inc.

August 2006- Got Married!!!!

January 2007- AIM Design Inc. was legally born (it has operated since 1998)

May 2007- Quit my day job and started doing graphic design and photography full time.

Nov-Dec 2007- Upgraded Camera Equipment to 21 MP dSLR (Canon 1Ds Mark III), new lenses and strobe unit.
